I am married with 4 children, aged 9, 11, 13, & 15. I qualified as a teaching assistant after my Husband left the RAF. My current job is supporting SEN children aged 16+. Working with and generally being around children is my true passion and heart. My interests & hobbies are spending time with family, reading, walking, listening to music & singing.
Working in schools & college for the last 5 years I have gained particular experience working with children with Autism and ADHD. Putting into practice: behaviour strategies, activities to stimulate, calm or engage the child/children.
Growing up I was a carer for my Mother and Sister. My Mother suffered with M.E for many years and from the age of nine, I took on a lot of household responsibilities, including looking after my younger Sister who suffers with ADHD, Epilepsy and Learning difficulties.
My efforts did not go unrecognised and I was awarded a ‘National Child of Achievement Award’ presented by the late Princess Diana.
As a teenager, I worked as a children’s entertainer and event organiser on a holiday park. Looking after children of all ages throughout the day and night.
I gained experience as a Girl Guide leader for a year and a half, organising games and activities for girls aged 11+, including camping out overnight.
Prior to moving to Morpeth, I volunteered at my local Church which involved an after school messy crafts club. I worked with the children who attended, making crafts, singing songs and monitoring behaviour. I also helped to serve food and gained a level 2 food handling certificate.
I have an up to date First Aid Certificate, DBS certificate and have attended courses involving Positive Handling, Autism awareness, ADHD awareness, Anxiety in children & Mental health, including self-harm awareness.
In my experience working in schools, I have supported children from Nursery right through to year 8, sometimes on a 1:1 basis with Autism, ADHD, Attachment Disorder, FASD, & PTSD and general behavioural difficulties. I have been involved in running a fun lunchtime club with a co-worker which was very popular. In this club, I took the opportunity to improve the children’s social skills, confidence and listening skills, along with building their self-esteem.
I also received training on positive handling restraint techniques, which were put into practice at the appropriate times.
As a person, I am approachable, passionate, proactive, confident, warm, friendly, trustworthy, and very reliable. I have high standards in all that I do and pride myself on completing jobs and tasks to the best of my ability. Ultimately working with and generally being around children is my true passion and I consider myself very lucky to have found a job that doesn’t feel like work. I hope you can give me the opportunity to prove myself.
