About Me

Hi, my name is Julie Harris. I am an experienced childminder who is OFSTED registered. I was first registered with OFSTED in 2006 meaning I have over 13 years experience in caring for many children, ranging from New-born babies to 16+ year olds.

In 2016 I relocated from Lanchester to Consett with my husband James who is employed by Northumbria Police & County Durham and Darlington Fire Service. We have three daughters and son who are 6, 14, 20 and 22 years old. We have a small family dog called Corey. He is a ten year old Cavalier King Charles and has been natured around children since he was 4 months old meaning he is incredibly friendly and amazing with children.

Having spent 10 years building up my successful childminding business we have decided to relocate. This has been a massive decision for both myself and my family but one which we feel will be worth the effort. I have been lucky enough to have worked with some absolutely fantastic families & children in Lanchester over the years & hope I'll gain the same joy in Consett.

Our new home is located two minutes walk from Consett town centre & consists of two large living areas, one of which will be used specifically for childcare. We are located a few seconds walk from Consett's fantastic main park. Childminding from this location gives me an amazing opportunity to make the most of this great facility - when weather suits of course.

Children in my care also have full access to the ground floor of the house and of course the bathroom facilities. I actively encourage the children to make full use of the facilities I have to offer. These include drawing and painting utensils, a library full of children’s books, a large range of toys and games to suit all ages, two different computer systems, masses of children’s DVD’s and supervised access to Netflix cartoons, films and educational programmes.

I always try to keep the children in my care fully occupied. I encourage them to play outdoors as much as possible, especially in the summer, and often take the children to our local park straight from school to play on the equipment there or to have a kick around with a football, run around in the woods or even a picnic.

I try to provide as much variation as possible when it comes to keeping the children entertained and educated both mentally and physically. Apart from everything listed above I often bake with the children, read books with them and even take them on day trips to places such as The Discovery Museum in Newcastle, local soft plays, play groups, the library, Gibside and Chopwell Woods, to name but a few. Although I am clearly not a teacher I do believe that the children need to experience a wide range of activities in order to help them learn and keep their minds active and stimulated from a young age.

I encourage the children in my care to celebrate special global occasions such as Chinese New Year, the Olympics, World Cup, St Georges Day, Easter, Christmas Etc. We use the art and craft materials to do projects on these special occasions and display the children's final product on the wall for all parents to view.

I also try to promote health and safety as much as possible. For example, children are made wear high visibility vests when walking home from school on the darker evenings and to hold hands in order to keep everyone together when crossing roads, and most of all, safe! I also carry our regular Health and Safety Checks in and around my home as well as Fire Drills which all children take part in.

My husband James, has registered with OFSTED to act as my assistant if needed. James is obviously fully CRB/DBS checked through OFSTED & through his own employment. He provides that extra eye both on school collections and around the house whilst I'm childminding. Although James is already first aid trained through his work he has also completed his peadriatric first aid course as this is fully recognised by OFSTED.

I have a recent OFSTED report which is available to view. I also have a hard copy which can be viewed in person upon request.

Please feel free to contact me if you wish to discuss child care arrangements or if you have any questions. As of July 2019 I should have some availability and would welcome any potential future clients to come meet with myself and view the surroundings where their children will be spending their time. I'm currently available to childmind in the Consett and Lanchester areas.

As you'll see, I also have some lovely reviews from some of my clients (past & present) so please take five minutes to have a read.

Many Thanks

Julie.

We were so happy with Julie as a childminder, was so sad when our son stopped going. Julie gave him such a breadth of experiences and it was so clear how happy he was to be left. Julie made our first time leaving our baby so much easier and we would definitely get back in touch in the future. Highly recommended xx

When our son was due to start Reception in Lanchester, my husband and I weren't sure what we were going to do regarding school pick ups and after school care with both of us working full time. I found Julie on this website and after reading her profile and seeing her friendly face, I had a good feeling about her. This was only amplified upon meeting her. She is a lovely, sophisticated, welcoming, always smiling, patient, youthful, and conscientious mother and childminder. She is passionate about both roles. The first indication to me that she would be an excellent childminder for my son, was from the way she interacted with her own children. They clearly love her deeply and are very respectful and helpful to her. They are also caring and sweet to the children she child minds. I felt that if she can raise such lovely children, she would be an excellent carer for my son. I wasn't wrong.

I'm always amazed when I pass Julie in the mornings on our respective school runs. Somehow, she is always cheerful, gentle, and amazingly well put together. The children in her care stay close to her and listen to her instructions. They also help each other. This is her positive influence on them.

At her house, she has all the facilities that she needs to keep the children entertained through the dark days of winter. My son came home with baked goods and crafts often. She also has a teddy that the children can take turns bringing home for the week and can write in a journal about what they did. During the warmer, brighter days, she doesn't hesitate to take them to the park or let them play in her back garden on the trampoline (age depending and under supervision) or with the bikes/cars. She will cater for whatever the individual child feels like doing on any particular day. No child is left out.

The children that Julie cared for were always sweet and caring to each other, no matter the age difference. I think that a lot of this good behaviour is down to how Julie teaches them to love, respect and help one another as well as the positive, nurturing environment that she provides for them. I really enjoyed hearing the older children from Julie's saying hello to my son whenever they would see him in the school yard. Even before he had made solid friendships in Reception, he had older friends at school looking out for him and making him feel welcome.

I am very sorry to see Julie move away. We will miss her very much. I recommend her unreservedly to anyone in Consett in need of a top quality childminder.

Julie has been looking after our son and daughter since September 2013, when I returned to full time work. They both absolutely love going to "My Julie's " as they say.
It was difficult to leave my son and daughter and going back to work full time, but Julie made this easier. She has been there for my daughters first day at nursery school and my sons move to a new school. She has always been very supportive and nothing at all is too much trouble for her.

She provides excellent activities for both our son and daughter . Activities range from swimming, soft play, trips to the park, singing club and an abundance of craft activities, just to name a few. Julie always has time to talk to the children and find out what they have been doing that day .

My husband and I are extremely happy with Julie and would highly recommend her! It is lovely to take our children to someone who they think the world of and adore spending time with .

Julie has been looking after our son since he started school in Lanchester last September, and from the very beginning, he has loved being in her care. We couldn't have chosen a better environment for his after-school care.

Come rain or shine, there is always plenty to play with at Julie's, and he really enjoys the trips to the park on warmer days too. Julie is always very good at giving each of the children individual attention, and he sees her as a good friend. She is also excellent at observing his personality and has lots of good ideas for new activities that will suit him. Needless to say, Julie's house has quickly became like a second home and he loves being there.

Being with other children has also helped him to become confident around children of all ages, despite currently being one of the youngest in the group. He particularly looks up to Julie's older children and thinks they are brilliant. Being around Corey also cured his deep-seated fear of dogs within his first week (for which we are very grateful!).

Julie has always been very helpful in making arrangements to accommodate him on occasional extra days when I have been away with work, sometimes at relatively short notice. I am hugely grateful for this flexibility. Although it doesn't happen often, there is nothing more settling than to receive a text message telling you that all is well and that your son has been safely picked up, when you're 8 hours behind in San Francisco!

Thank you Julie for looking after our son so beautifully. We are very happy with our childcare choice and can highly recommend. :-)
