About Me

Hello my name is Paul, I grew up in Reading where I went to Little Heath School. I gained a Masters at the University of Nottingham where I studied chemistry. From there I went to New Zealand where I received the prestigious Maurice Wilkins scholarship to do medicinal chemistry and immunology at Auckland University. My PhD was on the synthesis and testing of anti-cancer vaccines. I supplemented my income by demonstrating laboratory chemistry to undergraduates and one-on-one tutoring of undergraduate chemistry.

After my PhD I spent 5 months making HIV Drugs in St. Helens. I quickly realized I had enough of working in a lab with no sunlight, so moved back to Reading and started job hunting and volunteering at MENCAP, working with kids with learning disabilities. While I was searching for work in 2016 I started tutoring. I quickly realised I was very good at it and was enjoying being a tutor more than as a Senior Chemist. After a year of Tutoring I found I was bored when the students were at school so I signed myself up to a bachelors of Maths for “fun”. I completed the Maths degree during COVID lockdown in 2020 attaining a 1st.

I am a friendly person who understands that learning new subjects can be hard. I have dyslexic tendencies and spent many years in learning support, so I had to learn how to revise and what works for me. I believe in a systematic approach, starting with the basics and focusing on one subject at a time. I am willing to work with anyone who is willing to make an effort. I have experience working with students with learning disabilities (specifically ADHD, Asperger’s, Autism, deaf, dyscalculia, dyslexia, dyspraxia, slow processing and working memory), and tailor the lesson to the students needs. I have had a full DBS for the last 5 years

Outside of work I have a puppy called Freja and 2 cats called Artemis and Morpheus (who haven’t forgiven me for getting a dog). I spend my time listening to audiobooks, renovating my house, being active and baking.
