Hello,
My name is Sylwia and I am a qualified SEN teacher, as well as a qualified Mindfulness teacher (Paws b) to children aged 7-11. My tutoring style is firmly grounded in a wholistic approach and addresses each child’s emotional state to begin with. I believe this is hugely important as only when the child feels safe to take risks and is not afraid to make mistakes, their self-esteem grows, and the academic progress ensues. Child friendly mindfulness techniques are a great tool to achieve this. Establishing quality relationships with both the children and their parents is very important to me. This trust is an essential prerequisite for positive change to take place.
I am also a qualified cranio-sacral therapist and work within this modality with private clients (both adults and children), many of whom have special educational needs. I find this is a wonderful therapy to work alongside the specialised interventions, especially to regulate children’s overstimulated nervous system and often overwhelmed senses. Cranio-sacral therapy fantastically complements occupational therapy.
My Experience
Over the past 18 years, I have been assisting children on the autistic spectrum on their learning journey, as both a teacher and a therapist, and helping them to overcome their academic, social, and emotional barriers, improve their self-esteem and develop a joy for learning.
My teaching career began in 2002 when I moved to the UK from Poland as a newly qualified German teacher. I initially accepted a position to work as a teaching assistant in supporting secondary school pupils with various special educational needs, most of whom were on the autism spectrum, to gain an understanding of the British school system before seeking a permanent German teaching position.
This experience quickly turned into a fascination of the unique ways children with autism think and process the world, and would eventually, lead me to post graduate studies in Special and Inclusive Education and many related CPD trainings.
I have since worked in many different specialised educational and therapeutic settings, including 1:1 tutoring and class teaching, using various specialised interventions and therapies (such as TEACCH, PECS, Attention Autism, SCERTS Model, Mindfulness and Cranio-Sacral Therapy) which has allowed me to really understand the importance of having an individualised approach to every child to ensure the best results.
My comprehensive knowledge of primary curriculum combined with ASD friendly therapy-based approaches, allows me to assist children to overcome difficulties with learning, communication, social skills, emotional self-regulation, as well as how to relieve the anxiety and stress that can accompany autism.
