My Experience
I have experience teaching children from early years, assisting with phonics, and conducting Key Stage 1 lessons in reading, History, science, maths, and English. Moreover, I provide help with spelling, punctuation, and grammar skills.
In addition to my experience with Ks1, I've also worked extensively with Key Stage 2 students. One area of focus has been supporting their literacy development, including teaching phonics to those who needed additional support. While phonics is often associated with younger children, I found it beneficial to revisit these foundational skills with some KS2 students who had gaps in their understanding.
My approach with KS2 involved creating a learning environment that encouraged independence and critical thinking. Lessons were designed to promote problem-solving and collaboration. I often facilitated group projects where students could research topics, present their findings, and engage in discussions. In literacy, we delved into more complex texts and worked on developing analytical writing skills. For instance, we might analyze persuasive techniques in advertising or explore different perspectives in historical accounts. The goal was to foster self-reliance and a deeper understanding of subject matter, preparing them for the challenges of secondary school.
My approach to teaching math centers on making the subject relatable and engaging for students. I believe in building a strong foundation of conceptual understanding before moving on to rote memorization of formulas. I start by connecting mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios, helping students see the relevance of what they're learning. For example, when teaching fractions, we might use pizza slices or baking recipes to illustrate the concepts.
I also emphasize hands-on activities and visual aids to cater to different learning styles. Manipulatives like base-ten blocks, counters, and geometric shapes are invaluable tools for making abstract ideas more concrete. I encourage students to explore and discover mathematical principles through guided activities and problem-solving tasks. Creating a supportive and collaborative classroom environment is crucial. I encourage students to ask questions, share their thinking, and learn from each other. I also provide regular feedback and encouragement to build their confidence and foster a growth mindset.
My focus is solely on primary education, where I am dedicated to nurturing a love for learning and helping children develop strong skills. This approach ensures that learning is enjoyable and effective for young learners.
