About Me
I grew up in a small town in Portugal, surrounded by beautiful greenery and a close- community. My family is quite traditional; my parents both worked hard—my father is a mechanic, and my mother works in a cheese and chorizo-making business. I’m the oldest of two, and we’ve always been a tight family. Weekends often meant family gatherings, big meals with fresh seafood, and spending time outdoors. Moving to the UK was a big step for me. I came initially to improve my English alongside my husband and gain some work experience. I’ve been living here for 25 years. I’ve worked as a nanny, which I love because it allows me to connect with families and care for children, something I’ve always enjoyed. But I have also worked for two different schools and 2 different nurseries. I see working with families in the UK as a way to bring a bit of that warm, Portuguese family feeling to homes here. Living in the UK has been a wonderful experience; the culture is different, but I’ve grown to love the diversity and the opportunities it offers. I’m planning to continue working here for a while. In the future, I’d love to combine my experience and knowledge and maybe open my own childcare business or early learning centre, blending my Portuguese roots with my experience in the UK. Of course, I miss my family back in Portugal, and I try to visit them whenever I can. The long-term dream is to eventually move back, perhaps bring some of what I’ve learned here to my hometown, and create something meaningful there. For now, though, I’m focused on building a stable career and embracing everything the UK has to offer.
My Experience
As a nanny, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with families, providing individualized care and support to children ranging from infants to school-aged kids. My role involves more than just supervising; it’s about creating a safe and nurturing environment where children can thrive. I plan and implement daily routines, from meal preparation and nap times to engaging educational activities and creative play. I love watching children develop their skills, and it’s especially rewarding to see them reach important milestones, whether that’s saying their first words, learning to read, or making new friends. I also prioritise open communication with parents, ensuring we work as a team to maintain consistency in the child’s routine and discipline. I believe building trust with the family is essential for creating a positive and supportive atmosphere. Additionally, my background as a teaching assistant has allowed me to incorporate learning opportunities into everyday play, promoting early literacy, numeracy, and social skills. As a teaching assistant, I gained experience working in a classroom setting, supporting teachers and helping to manage groups of children. This role has strengthened my understanding of early childhood education and the importance of structured learning environments. I assisted in planning lessons, preparing materials, and leading small group activities. I also provided one-on-one support to students who needed extra help, ensuring every child had the chance to succeed and feel included. Working in both capacities has taught me the importance of adaptability, patience, and strong organizational skills. It’s a joy to create positive, educational, and engaging experiences for children in both home and school settings.
