My Summary
About Me
I am a creative researcher and mental health support worker with a BA in English and an MA in Fine Art. I grew up by the sea in Plymouth with my two younger sisters in a very creative household filled with storytelling, play, nature, music and art. All of this has stayed with me, and has informed my academic, social and empathetic capacity, and I am deeply committed to understanding, growing, learning and healing through these means.
After spending time working for charity projects, I have realised that I am most passionate about engaging with and supporting other people, and am looking for work where I can form in-person connections and feel part of networks of care, and spend more time working with children. I am moving back to Brighton in July (I lived there from 2011-14) to establish myself there as I work towards beginning a PhD in Performance Art part-time in the near future. This research will look at relating to the world and its problems with compassion, exploring this through performance, and echoes the values I have outlined above. It also involves running creative workshops geared towards self-compassion and connecting with others, and I have recently run some voluntary workshops at a Horticultural Therapy allotment to this end.
I feel inspired to work with children in my local area because I believe they deserve to feel seen, understood and to have their curiosity encouraged, and I firmly believe this supports their development and learning in all areas of their lives. I want to be a part of this and to be trusted with this responsibility would be very rewarding. I also believe adults can often learn a lot about approaching life with imagination, honesty and immediacy from children, so find it very life-affirming to connect with them.
My Experience
In the years 2008-2014 worked as an ad-hoc babysitter for multiple families. Caring for between 2 and 4 children ranging from the age of 1 to 10 at a time. My responsibilities included cooking, reading, homework, creative activities, baking, playing in the garden, bathing, settling for bed, reading, cleaning and tidying. I would usually do this one evening (6 hours) per week for three years and intermittently during holidays after this. I also took care of a 6 year old weekly for 6 hours in Berlin over a period of two months alongside an internship in 2016. More recently I have looked after my cousin between the ages of 6 and 8 for 6 hours at a time, including outdoor adventures, allotment time, homework, drawing and creative activities, cooking, playing, settling for bed, staying overnight and attending school events. In recent years I have also spent time caring for friends' children, ranging in age from 1 to 7, taking them out for the afternoon, picking them up from school and caring for them for the evening.
I am endlessly interested in how children relate to the world and love nurturing and connecting with this. I babysat a lot in the past in Plymouth and Berlin and really enjoyed taking care of and engaging with my younger sisters and cousins- who are much younger than me- growing up. Having spent time as a mental health care worker, I have grown committed to person-centred care and empowerment, and value encouraging children's self-understanding and curiosity. I also offer an understanding of safeguarding, First-Aid, housekeeping, and all-round academic strength (I have 11 GCSEs A*-B and Four A Levels A*-B). I also have a TEFL
Qualification and a Level to CPD certificate in Counselling Skills and Mental Health Advocacy.
I have lots of passions that I love to share. I am an avid reader and writer, and can absolutely support with any homework tasks as I have all-round capacity and curiosity. I can paint, draw, write, sew and craft and have endless ideas for different activities I could design around these skills. I play piano, flute, guitar and sing, and can read and write music, and would love to share this and support kids in developing these skills and expressing themselves. Appreciation for nature and animals and spending time outside getting my hands dirty is a huge part of my life, so I could take kids exploring, combine this with creative activities, ecological and climate awareness and sustainability activities. I also love baking and cooking and love to try new things so could absolutely share and encourage this with kids (I follow a vegan diet but am comfortable cooking for all diets). I also love performing, theatre, dancing, and being silly so could transfer this into imaginative play and supporting with any performance endeavours kids are interested in. In general, I love talking to others about what they love, and care deeply about trauma-informed, person-centred, compassionate approaches to life - so can provide a compassionate environment in which children are seen and valued for who they are and what they think and apply this when supporting kids to de-escalate situations, regulate their nervous systems and stay focused and patient, using tools such as yoga, meditation, mindfulness, breathing activities and somatic exercises. Lastly, having spent two years as a residential mental health care worker, I enjoy a varied, engaged work environment, and am adept at staying tidy, clean and organised in this context, prioritising the care of others and providing sustained, consistent support in what can be a changeable situation. I am also familiar with complex, intersecting needs and vulnerabilities, such as mental health diagnoses, learning difficulty diagnoses and neurodiversity as a result of this work.
