About Me
I am a fully qualified social worker who has worked in numerous schools and nurseries, including specialist SEN/autism provisions. I just adore working with kids, it is such a fun job! I value the deeper connection that can be built when working with the same families on a longer term basis which is why I have gone into this line of work. I have a SEN child of my own so I understand the additional pressure this puts on working parents. I am fully DBS checked.
Less formally, I love the outdoors, I love doing arts and crafts and planning fun science activities, I love reading and cultural enrichment, I love animals, laughing, dancing, and playing. I mostly love the bond and relationship you build up with children and young people in your care. I have yet to meet a child who I couldn’t love, yet to meet one who didn’t have something about them that both inspired and impressed me.
I believe in meeting children and young people where they are. I believe that the quality of the relationship you have with a child is what matters most. I believe in unconditional positive regard. I believe in the value of play as a tool to help young people learn. I am playful, warm, empathetic and energetic. I know when to calm things down and take a break, and when to have fun. I can be relaxed and loving but still keep control of a group of children.
I mostly just love this line of work!
My Experience
I have worked in child protection as a social worker for many years so I am extremely comfortable working with kids at all ages and stages.
The last 10 years I have worked in numerous primary and secondary schools, both state and private, as a TA and as a specialist 1-1 and group SEN specialist. I have worked as a specialist 1-1 in nurseries as well. I also have an autistic daughter so I deeply understand and relate to the importance of connection, quality of relationship, patience, and therapeutic intervention when it comes to providing quality care to all children, and especially those with additional needs.
I have extensive experience and education in therapeutic childcare as well as the Montessori approach - training initially in a secure unit in Berlin before completing a masters and the majority of a PhD in the UK in therapeutic approaches to childcare before my own child’s needs took over my time and meant my career took a different direction.
My Qualifications
I have an undergraduate degree in Law, a masters in social work, a further masters in social pedagogy (with a specialism in therapeutic intervention with children and young people) and most of a PhD in the same area. I am fully DBS checked. I have previously held first aid qualifications which have now lapsed, but I am more than willing to refresh these.
My Availability
I am available during the school hours every day of the week, and can commit to one to two evenings a week.
