I have been an Ofsted Registered Child Minder since August 2001. Since this time I have had experience in children ranging from 3 months up to 11 years (not including my own).
I have a daughter who is 19, she is currently away at university, a 16 year old son, and a 23 year old stepson who lives next door with his family.
I try to ensure that my home is as welcoming to everyone who spends time here, and that it becomes a home away from home.
During a typical day we would go out in morning. This is often meeting with other childminders - this allows the children with me to make friends with more children, whilst remaining in a high adult: child ratio. We may go to the zoo, parks, toddler group, on a train ride, or messy play and craft activities. This enables the children with me to gain a wide range of experiences.
Lunch is generally had back at mine, then in the afternoon we play - this may be games learning to share and take turns, or with the toys developing our imagination.
The activities we do are planned around each child, therefore ensuring that everyone has the chance to develop to their full potential. This could be a colouring session, with the younger children practising their mark making and crayon control, the older children could be practising writing their name or doing dot-to-dots.
I work closely with parents to ensure that I stick to similar timings in our routine, so that sleep times etc. are as consistent as possible.
In my spare time I am a member of St John Ambulance - I have run the Cadets (10-18 year olds) for over 14 years. I have also been a Rainbow Guider (5-7 year olds) for over 10 years, I help at a Guide unit (10-14 year olds) and I run a Ranger Unit (14-25 year olds).
During the 19 years+ I have been Childminding I have worked with 50+ families (1 came back for a second time), with children from 12 weeks to 12 years. Some of these families for many years.
Before my children were born I used to work in a nursery. I started off as a 1-1, then progressed to run the room for 2 year olds. During this time I was responsible for settling the children in, the activities for the room and working closely with parents.
I am an Eligible Childminder so am able to accept the Early Years funding for over 3's (30 hours a week for eligible children, term time).
I am also able to accept the free sessions for eligible 2 year olds.
