Hello, I am clara mcdaid, an OFSTED registered Childminder, graded OUTSTANDING in all areas. I have been childminding for 14 years and three years ago I gained a First Class BA (Hons) full degree in Early Childhood Studies, following on from a previously undertaken Level 5 qualification in Early Years Leadership and Management.
I am a member of the PACEY (Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years), the Children Come First Network and am also an accredited support childminder, on hand to support new childminders with my knowledge and experience. All of the above has helped to develop a great local support network which is advantageous to the children, parents and to me. I am very up-to-date in terms of training, safeguarding and legislation and regularly attend Early Years conferences, one recently in Doncaster surrounding the issue of Narrowing the Gap between boys' and girls' achievements. I always seize training opportunities when they arise although since the pandemic this has proved to be more challenging. The courses complement my knowledge and abilities so that I am confident in delivering the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum in the best way possible. I have a very holistic approach and consider all aspects of a child when planning activities and experiences.
I cover Southend on Sea, Westcliff on Sea, Leigh on Sea, Thorpe Bay, Shoebury, Rochford and Great Wakering.
I have been married for 20 years and have two daughters who are both at secondary school and are happy, warm, very bright, funny girls. They love having babies and toddlers in the house and are extremely nurturing and gentle. The children love them.
I currently look after 6 children under 5 and do not do primary school collections or deliveries, preferring to focus on educare of children in the early years age category. I compile a learning journey for each child under five which contains all their developmental milestones by way of observational photos and text. These are used to help me assess and plan effectively, with the Early Years Foundation Framework underpinning all that I do. This Learning Journey is an ongoing document as long as the child is in my care and it is a great pleasure putting these together. Parents enjoy the photographic memories, too. I am happy to do initial home visits and hold individual parents' evenings on an ad hoc basis, if required.
We live in a lovely big house very close to Southend Victoria station and town centre, as well as St Marys school. We have a play room (for general play such as dressing up, role play, home corner, reading, music, dolls etc)and morning room (for craft activities, woodwork, piano and mealtimes).
The children have access to a huge selection of books and poems and also read e-books with me. This complements the hardcopy books whilst adding new interactive technical skills.
We also have a nice enclosed garden with a calm-natured cat as well as an 11 year old enormous gold fish which all the children regularly enjoy re-naming. (Currently Fish.)
I have been childminding since 2007 and am delighted to have two OUTSTANDING inspection reports. I am qualified to degree level in this field and I am passionate about my work and love being around children. I have very happy, positive children in my setting and we all communicate and socialise extremely well. The dynamics work well and I am always conscious of maintaing that, so I offer settling-in periods unique to each child/family.
I am always trying to better myself, professionally and have undertaken the following courses:
Understanding Aspergers and the Autistic Spectrum
Advanced Safeguarding Children
Practical Activities for a Multicultural Setting
Level 2 Food Hygiene / Catering
Introduction to Childminding Practice (Unit 1)
Unit 2 of Diploma in Home based Childcare (for which I was graded an A)
Unit 4 of the above Diploma (grade A)
Unit 3 of the above Diploma (grade A).
Unit 5 of the above Diploma. (grade A) (These are all Level 3)
Level 5 In Early Years Leadership and Management
ELKLAN speech and Language 6 week course
BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies
This is in addition to the mandatory courses undertaken:
Paediatric First Aid (updated April 2019)
Introduction to Home-based Childcare.
I have my own allergic child and, therefore, have experience and training in anaplylaxis, asthma and allergies as well as hypermobility. Since the new legislation that came into play on December 2014 all businesses which offer food must meticulously list all know allergens in the menus that they offer. To reinforce this I am now listing each of the 14 main European allergens if they are contained within any food that I provide. I also identify and avoid any additional allergens or irritants which may be unique to a child.
I charge an hourly rate and invoice in advance by cash, standing order or childcare vouchers (including tax-free vouchers)
Please see above. I previously worked in Buying and Merchandising for Selfridges, Oxford Street and then Burberry (for 18 years) and then realised my passion of working with children. It is so much more rewarding to look after children than my previous career and I thoroughly enjoy every moment. Children are an absolute blessing, to be cherished and nurtured and it is a privilege to be a part of such a crucial part of their lives. I am very warm, smily and friendly and calm. I always have a ready, listening ear for any child who wants a chat and love to read and sing with the children..

Clara has had both our boys... our eldest is now 4 and has been with Clara since he was 9 month old, our youngest who is nearly two has been with Clara since he was 9 months old and will be with her for a good while yet.
My boys go into claras home and barely look back, because they are so happy and well cared when they are there. They are treated with kindness and given plenty of experiences for learning , developing socially, educationally and emotionally while having fun.
They both love her.
It is daunting finding someone you trust to care for your children but with Clara we have felt completely at ease. Clara keeps in excellent contact with us, she feeds them well with nutritious food, plans fun and educational activities and is completely reliable, this is so important for us as we are working.
We feel so lucky to have had such a wonderful childcare experience for our boys and we are so greatful for the care they get with Clara. Her home environment is so lovely for children, they receive consistency of care and lots of dedicated attention that would be difficult in another setting.
I honestly couldn't recommend Clara more highly.
Clara is a great childminder. My little girl has been going to her since she was 10 months old (she’s just over two now) and I honestly felt comfortable returning to work knowing that Clara would be looking after her.
Each child gets dedicated care and attention in Clara’s homely setting, it feels like Maeve is one of the family when I drop her off and pick her up.
The communication is brilliant, I get text and picture updates throughout the day and Clara will always respond if you have a question. Plus Clara is very flexible with adapting to my work schedule.
Clara is very supportive and knowledgable in early years education. The daily activities for the children are always fun and varied plus they often go out for park and beach adventures. My little girl loves singing nursery rhymes with Clara and has learnt so much since attending the setting.
I would highly recommend Clara as a childminder, I feel very lucky that I found such a safe, fun and nurturing setting for Maeve.
My daughter was born just before the first lockdown and was very attached and I was worried about transition to a childcare setting - I shouldn’t have been. Clara, was brilliant with easing my under one into her care. She has excellent communication skills so I can see what Aida has been up to that day and it’s lovely to see photos of your child happily playing and enjoying so many enriching experiences.
Aida has come on leaps and bounds in her social skills and speech and is so eager to give things a go and we credit this to the care and support she receives with Clara. The days are always busy full of learning and playing and we couldn’t recommend Clara highly enough.
My daughter Eleanor started with Clara when she was one.
As a first time mum I was nervous and anxious about leaving Eleanor, but Clara's home is so warm with a real comfortable feel to it that these feelings quickly disappeared. Clara is very professional and you instantly know that she loves what she does and is very passionate about it.
I wanted Eleanor to have structure to her day in an environment that stimulated her learning, which Clara provided. Any area of learning started at home would be reinforced by Clara, which really helped Eleanor to grasp new concepts.
Lovely lady and so sad to be leaving her.
My children have been going to Clara for three and a half years, my son four days a week and my daughter after school two days a week. Both children are very happy and love going there.
Clara takes the children she looks after to various playgroups/toddler groups during the week as well as on other outings, and my son is always learning new things. He eats well each day and his development has always seemed to come on brilliantly. He always comes home happy, having had a full and exciting day.
Clara communicates with me regularly regarding any concerns, milestones reached and any other important information.
Clara is very flexible, caring for the children during the school holidays when we need her to and also additional days/times during term time when she is able. She takes care to discuss any issues with me relating to the children’s behaviour and emotions etc.
I have always been, and remain extremely happy with Clara’s care of my children. She treats them not indifferently to her own children whilst in her care. If they hurt themselves or are upset about anything she offers them comfort and reassurance and makes them feel better – and she adjusts to every child’s personalities brilliantly.
