About Me

I have a degree in science, and a degree and PhD in history and philosophy of science. I teach ages 5 - 16 in Maths and Science.

MY APPROACH. Confidence and motivation are the crux of any successful learning. It’s not a matter of whether you can learn something but of how much better can you do. It’s always possible to do better! Focusing on a student’s strengths rather than weaknesses enables them to learn quicker and become more confident in their abilities. By beginning with known strengths (and I guarantee EVERY student has strengths), a student’s confidence can rise rapidly as they quickly see better results than they had before. It is then easier to deal with what appear to be ‘weaknesses.’ By this point students are keener to tackle what have been trickier issues for them and find, often to their surprise, that their performance on these issues has improved.

This approach works no matter what the age of the student or the ‘level’ they are at compared to others in the same class. I don’t just use it with exams in mind. It is important for children to find out that learning can be satisfying and FUN. This is the most important skill they can learn because so much they do in their lives requires learning how to do something. For students wishing to enhance already good grades a revised version of this approach can be used, but it still relies on ‘how to do even better.’ Students looking to enhance grades can feel under pressure and in danger of no longer enjoying the learning experience. Focusing on ‘even better’ can help to avoid these problems. This approach can also be revised for use in ‘general maintenance’ teaching.
