My Summary
About Me
My background is in Art and Design and I hold a BA (Hons) Public Art and Design. On the course I specialised in glass art. Since graduating in 1997 I have carried out a number of private domestic commissions, such as creating stained glass pieces and bespoke mirrors for homes. I have also put my expertise into facilitating art sessions at schools, family days and community groups as detailed in the section below.
I am also qualified to teach English as a Foreign Language, having taken the CELTA course in order to teach English in Japan. Therefore I have an insight into helping people whose mother tongue is not English express themselves creatively.
Although I have also tutored adults in art and design sessions, I particularly enjoy working with children and young people and helping them to express their ideas creatively. I have found that an art and design practice can also help to make sense of other core subjects such as English and mathematics. I am able to help students with examinations and to put together a portfolio for art school.
I regularly attend art and design courses myself to keep my skills fresh.
My Experience
I have worked as an arts facilitator at schools, community groups and drop-in art sessions. To cite four examples of projects I have worked on:
. The creation of six coloured glass windows for a primary school in Kent. Children from Years 4 to 6 made glass panels with ideas based on Bible stories to begin with, substituting perspex for glass. I then translated these ideas into large panels which were then placed in situ (Spring - Autumn 2010).
. Arts and Crafts Tutor at Brent Council north London offering creative sessions to families, in order for children to try out artistic activities with a parent or guardian. The families were from a range of cultural backgrounds and many of them were not native speakers of English (Spring 2010)
. Nine smaller Perspex panels on the themes of nature created by Reception and Year One children at a north London school. The completed panels were hung around the school (May 2011).
. A mosaic panel created at a drop-in session at Art in the Park run by Friends of the Brixton Windmill. This group has successfully overseen the refurbishment of an original windmill in south London which had fallen into disrepair (August 2014).
I spent eighteen months in Japan from November 2006 to June 2008 where I taught English language at a conversation school. In my capacity as a teacher I often brought art into the classroom. I also helped a Japanese friend run some art classes at her English language summer school.
