About Me

Supporting children and young people has always been something I have done. My passion and caring nature enable me to support children and young people to first of all be children, but also develop the best they can.

My Experience

I volunteered as a PE teacher at a local primary school called Lanner School. This involved teaching all years, from Year 1 to Year 6. Due to teaching different age groups, I had to use my previous knowledge of sports and teaching to ensure that I gave all year groups a challenge that was achievable as well as ensuring that they felt they were learning new skills. This experience made me more confident as it improved my ability to teach different age groups as well as adapting my teaching to suit the children I worked with.

I volunteered as a children’s football coach for under 7’s, this took place in Newquay. This involved training the children in new skills such as passing, defending and scoring as well as other general football skills. I also prepared the children for matches on the day and coached them through the game. This involved setting the team up, ensuring they were warmed up, providing them with constructive criticism/feedback, all the time ensuring that I fulfilled the necessary health and safety checks.

I volunteered as a PE teacher at a local secondary school – Treviglas Secondary School. This allowed me to assist in the delivery of a variety of different PE lessons, ranging from rounders, athletics and other sports such as football and rugby. This allowed me to feel comfortable with not only primary school-aged children but also older children who attended secondary school.

During my time at Wadebridge Secondary School, I also took on the opportunity to coach a girl’s after school football club. This allowed me to improve my confidence in supporting the girls with their football development and allowed me to individually assess their skills and offer them feedback during matches.

During this summer, I assisted a friend with a 5-day nannying role. As this was new to me, I was able to develop my confidence in looking after children within their own home. This experience involved planning fun and exciting activities that were age appropriate and that were in the interest of the children I was looking after. The children I looked after were two 10-year-old girls, during the 5 days, we took day trips to the local beach, the zoo and horse riding. Other duties also included preparing healthy and nutritious meals, suggested by the girls and their parents as well as household duties such as ensuring the girls had tidied their rooms and fed the family dog. Overall, this has given me the confidence to apply for more jobs that involve caring for children within their own homes. This allows me to get to know the child and build up a close relationship with them.

I ran a holiday club for children with one other staff member through a company called Go Active. This involved grouping children into appropriate age groups to ensure that children were challenged to the best of their ability. The sporting activities varied from football, rugby, and archery. I feel that this gave me confidence in working in a pressured environment where I had to ensure that I stayed punctual and organised.

I also worked for Education 1st, this is an alternative education provider which helps children with varying behavioral difficulties. This job challenged me as I was able to develop new skills, for example managing unwanted behavior and using strategies to encourage children to stay on task when completing work. I made this role fun by getting to know the children and their likes/dislikes and this helped me to build a trusting relationship with them.

I have recently taken on the role of a cover teacher in two different agencies – Five Education and Tradewind. This has given me the opportunity to work in different schools and gain experience teaching a range of lessons in areas that I am particularly interested in, for example Physical Education and Personal, Social and Health Education.

I moved up to London and worked at a school in Brixton as part of the pastoral team. My second year there saw me come a Head of Year, ensuring the pastoral, safeguarding and attendance needs were met.

I have recently moved back to Cornwall due to personal reasons.
