About Me

I am a qualified & experienced primary school teacher based in Oxford with SEN experience, now offering private one-to-one online tutoring for children aged 5-16 in maths and phonics.

I have a passion for helping children learn in a fun and personalised way. I aim to develop confidence, skills and enjoyment of learning. In my experience, children learn best when they are taught by someone who enjoys their subject and has the capacity to make learning a voyage of discovery. I seek to offer this kind of learning environment and have found that pupils respond well to it.

I believe that listening to the child is absolutely crucial, not only does it build up the relationship, but also offers valuable insight as to how the child is processing the work and any misconceptions they may initially hold. As the sessions are always 1:1 (unless the parents would like to join us) the pupils are given my undivided attention and are not worried about 'losing face' in front of peers.

I see my role as a tutor as supporting children in their learning - identifying areas to work on and teaching in a way that is meaningful to their specific needs. This approach can differ from a class teacher who has a class full of children. Both are, in my opinion, the best jobs in the world.

My Experience

I have over 25 years of experience as a primary school teacher and held senior roles including leading Key Stages and a wider range of subjects. (I was also the senior teacher/ deputy head in one school).

I was asked by my headteacher if I would be interested in becoming a maths specialist teacher. I enjoyed maths but struggled with this subject as a child so, with trepidation, I enrolled in the course - and truly loved it. The course really improved my confidence and teaching in maths and I am now passionate about it. I loved learning so much that I went on to take an MA (Oxford Brookes). I am now keen that all children in my care are helped to gain confidence, skills and strategies to help them enjoy maths and make strides in their learning.

I enjoyed supporting teachers in their teaching of maths and creating a system (that I was asked to present at a maths conference). My record system planning was adopted by a number of schools. I enjoy learning and get excited to find a new approach or maths topic to investigate.

All children are unique and I have the privilege of working with so many wonderful children and young people. Some pupils have been diagnosed with a variety of SEN challenges. As I prepare every lesson for the specific child, it is much easier for the child to make progress and succeed, than it is in a classroom, as the work is tailored to their individual needs in a way that is accessible for them. This preparation is a significant part of the plans - it often takes me as long to plan the lesson with the appropriate resources, as it does to teach the lesson!

Initially, I only taught primary pupils but was asked by one pupil to support her in her secondary maths. I found this worked well for both of us and now am happy to teach right across the primary years and through the secondary phases to GCSEs.

I have worked as a private tutor since 2016 and, as I have elderly parents to care for, now focus on online lessons which works surprisingly well.
