About Me
My name is Claire and I am looking to tutor during school hours. My areas of expertise lie in re-engaging children with a passion for learning. I strive to build a close bond with the children I work with so they feel a real connection to what they are learning.
My methods may seem a bit unorthodox and unique, but as I belive each child is a whole person with their own facinating personalities and individual learning styles, it makes sense that they don't all learn in the same way. I will endeavour to find the best way to tutor your child.
If our requirements don't quite match, please message me as I am flexible as to my working days,dates and times. My preference is term time only, 20-25 hrs per week.
About me:
I have more than 20+ years of experience working with mainstream and children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
This has been within schools, play-schemes, child-care settings, as an Au-pair, babysitte and private nanny, home tutor.
I also have a son of my own. At primary school we found out he is dyslexic. This taught me to think outside the box to find creative ways to help him and through his passions I have learnt lots about Minecraft, football, dungeons and dragons, amongst lots of other things.
I am creative and enjoy doing all kinds of arts and crafts. I recently taught myself to crochet. I play various musical instruments and during lock-down, enjoyed teaching my son to play the piano.
I am passionate about education and am an active member of the voluntary organisation, Islington Parent Carer Forum, which supports people who have children with a disability/ SEN.
I am enthusiastic about nurturing childrens' growth and development and excel in creating an environment, not only where they can learn, but where their emotional and social needs are also met. I am lucky to be ELSA trained and enjoy the pastoral care of this role, building bonds and creating a collaborative, emotionally secure environment where trust and honesty thrive. I have also been trained in phonics so can help your child learn to read and write and beyond.
I have excellent communication skills and enjoy very good working relationships with both teachers, other staff members, parents and children.
My Experience
I have worked as a Nanny, Au-pair, learning support assistant, teaching assistant, learning and behavior mentor, academic mentor, and a maths, English, phonics tutor and private home tutor.
These skills incorporate working with Primary school children from reception to year 6 with both mainstream and Special Educational Needs.
My Qualifications
I was an au-pair in Germany for a year, with sole responsibility for a 6-year-old, plus weekend/afterschool care for an 8 & 11-year-old.
* acted in loco parentis on fencing trips to France, to groups of children, aged 11-15-year-olds and regularly organized and ran annual adult fencing trips to France. I have conversational French language skills [am doing on-line courses to improve this].
* read to groups of children and have assisted on many outings/trips at my son’s primary school.
I absolutely love arts/crafts, singing, playing music, cooking, boardgames, imagination, lots of sport and being active.
I regularly practice mindfulness, meditation, and yoga.
Happy to attend courses/training.
I am highly computer literate [use of all Microsoft package, plus bespoke packages].
I hold a full, clean UK driving license and my own car.
I am fully DBS checked / on the DBS update service.
