My Summary
About Me
I am currently studying Psychology with Criminology after doing a gap year. During my gap year I volunteered in nurseries in South America, as well as travelled a bit of Europe, after having worked as a carer for two ladies with Muscular Dystrophy. I have also spent the past few years childminding for my now five-year-old sister, every Wednesday, Friday and most weekends. Additionally, I’ve just finished work as a Trauma-specialist Support Worker for two young children, now 7 and 9 years old, and currently work with a staffing agency for nurseries across Brighton and Hove, but looking for something a little more personal. I’m hoping to go on to become a child trauma therapist after completing my third year and a masters.
Having finished my job as a trauma support worker, where I provided therapeutic care for two recently adopted children, I am trained and experienced in the DDP PACE approach. This is approaching all challenging behaviours, emotions and reactions with the playfulness and empathy children, particularly those with additional needs, really require. Of course, at the same time I had to ensure there were necessary boundaries and structure that the children followed. It’s all about balance! So I’d be able to support your children through any difficulties and hard emotions in a calm, nurturing and productive manner.
I’m passionate about languages, fluent in Italian and strong in Spanish. On top of this, I have experience in teaching languages from completing the intermediate TEFL course, as well as teaching English to children of ages two to 6 in South America. I’m able to effectively help and communicate with your children via fun and engaging ways! I’ve also just started learning French on duolingo, so although it’s very basic I can also help with some French here and there.
I’ve always loved being outdoors and in nature, having done Scouts and Explorers for seven years. It’s so important for children to spend time in nature to gain courage and to learn about their environment.
To add on, I’m also passionate about cooking and have learnt my cooking skills through Food Tech GCSE. I’m currently focused on learning nutritional and balanced meals, but of course, with the occasional sweet treat.
My Experience
I’ve been working with or caring for children since I was 15, through various babysitting jobs, as well as volunteering at Cubs for 6 months. During my time at Cubs, I helped provide the 7 to 11-year-olds with fun and engaging activities while ensuring their safety. Then since my baby sister was a newborn, I have cared for her every Wednesday, Friday and most weekends. Furthermore, during my time in South and Central America, I volunteered in daycare centres. In Costa Rica I worked with 30 four to six-year-olds, predominately on my own, for a month, whereas in Ecuador I worked with 15 one to two-year-olds for a month. My work here included teaching English, aiding in music lessons, helping the children work through any difficulties they were facing, adapting my approach to the different needs of the children, providing engaging activities that aided development, and helping with the cooking and cleaning.
I have now just finished providing trauma-informed support to a seven and nine year old, who come from a background of neglect and abuse. My role involves all the regular nanny duties, as well as using the DDP-PACE approach I have been trained in, when difficult feelings, behaviours or emotions come out. Because of their past, these children now face various learning, behavioural and physical difficulties, therefore I am always needing to be patient and to act calm and quickly on my feet. My role became full time, live in care for two months due to medical reasons of the mother, so I have gained such valuable and extensive experience in caring for and supporting children, particularly those with additional needs.
Currently, I work with a staff solutions agency for nurseries where I get sent to nurseries across Sussex that need an extra hand. This has ensured I have the essential experience for ages 1 to 4. Due to the nature of working for a staffing agency I’m able to quickly adapt to new environments and make strong connections with children and adults quickly.
My Qualifications
I am certified in Paediatric first aid, Makaton level one, DDP-informed PACE therapeutic approach and TEFL. I speak fluent Italian and advanced Spanish. In my A-Levels I received A* for Spanish, A* for Sociology and A for Psychology. During my Psychology course at University I have completed many beneficial modules, including Child development, Brain and behaviour, Child language, as well as currently studying Educational psychology.
My Availability
I’m currently in my final year studying Psychology with Criminology at the University of Sussex. I’m hoping for some part time work that enables me to support and build strong relationships with the children and family, whilst also prioritising my university work.
