My Summary
About Me
My name is Kalina and I am a Psychology student obtaining my Master’s degree in York University. I am enrolled in the Development, Disorders and Clinical Practice program, as I have always been drawn to the topic of child development and want to work closely with children in my practice. Throughout my studies, I have gained both theoretical insights on child development and have had many opportunities to gain practical experience. As a baby sitter, my goal is to take into consideration every child’s unique personality and ability level, as well as their strengths and personal interests, and to tailor my work accordingly. I strive to encourage children to be creative, imaginative and active, give them opportunities for socialization, grant them freedom to express themselves and come up with engaging activities to fill in their free time. I believe in the effectiveness of play as a way for children to explore the world, learn and express themselves. My aim is to build trusting relationships with the children I work with, to assure they feel encouraged and understood, and are given a safe foundation to explore the surrounding environment from.
My Experience
Previously, I have worked with children on many different occasions. In past years, I have worked as a supervisor for children in middle childhood up to early adolescence in a project with a focus on integration through recreational and educational activities. Additionally, I have mentored children with developmental challenges, aiming to offer individual assistance to promote interpersonal, educational and motor skills. As such, I am experienced in special education needs and have developed a relevant set of skills.
Furthermore, I have previously babysat children of various ages ranging from early childhood to early adolescence. I have gained personal perspective on the unique needs typical for those different ages and have developed skills to fulfil them. I have learned to create different recreational activities for children, to stimulate their creativity, imagination and social development. At the same time, I also have experience in helping with school-related activities, working alongside children to help them fully understand their school lessons, work on their projects and evoke their curiosity.
Lastly, as a psychology student and research assistant I have worked closely with infants in a laboratory setting. As such, I have gained valuable experience in paediatric work and interacting with young children in professional settings. This position has prepared me to adjust professional protocols to the specifics and needs of the individual developmental level, and to be flexible, adaptive and patient. I was trained to administer tests in the form of play, communicate instructions in age-appropriate language, make on the spot adjustments according to the child’s specifics and ensure optimal attention and interest throughout task implementation.
Overall, my experience so far taught me to be flexible and patient, engage in empathetic listening, show understanding and communicate actively. Furthermore, on the practical end, I have learned to adapt lessons and information to the individual developmental level and abilities, taking into consideration differences in learning styles and abilities. I am able to implement and follow overtime the individualised programs specifically tailored to a child’s unique needs, and to track their progress overtime, assessing strengths and weaknesses for maximal performance efficiency. Finally, as a psychology graduate, I am familiar with behavioural management techniques and know how to apply them in various settings to promote positive behavioural change.
