Broomhill Bank School

I am a teacher at Broomhill Bank School. The students I work with are aged 11-19 with communication and interaction (C&I) difficulties such as a diagnosis of autism, aspergers, pervasive developmental disorder, and/or severe specific receptive or expressive language impairment/disorder.

I have had 3 previous nannying roles. I have done after school care and holiday work. I have worked with young children aged 4-13.

Valence School

My role at Valence school was a student support assistant, working with children who had physical disabilities and complex medical needs. My role required me to encourage independence of students, not only in their schooling environment but also outside of the classroom. Through working at the school I developed as a person greatly, it took a caring, friendly and understanding individual to fulfil the role to its full potential and I feel this is why it suited me greatly. I worked with pupils aged 4-19 years all students’ needs were unique to them so getting to know and understand each pupil was essential. I am a fast learner and using my initiative which was important in this role. Along with being inside the classroom I assisted daily with personal care involving various moving and handling manoeuvre’s to suit each young person’s needs.

Summer play scheme 1:1 support

Whilst home for the summer I spent three weeks working as a 1:1 support assistant with three children who had special educational needs.
This position made my summer truly worthwhile. I got to work with three extraordinary and unique children and contribute to their summer holidays. Playing in the sun, making arts and crafts and joining in on numerous work shops. This position made me more determined to return to university and finish my degree along with giving me the opportunity to learn from children and expand my knowledge on special educational needs.

Through my University I have had the opportunity to complete two work experience placements and two different special schools. Working as a teaching assistant and helping students in every day school activity. At one of my placements my task along with peers was to create a dance piece for the children to perform at a theatre in front of a large audience and perform alongside a variety of schools and university work pieces. Taking this opportunity gave the chance to develop myself as an individual, communication, patience; hard work and perseverance were a few set of skills which stood out during my time at the school. The pupils educational needs varied therefore it was important to take the time to get to know each individual in order to communicate with them in the most effective and progressive manner. Working with the pupils weekly was very rewarding, watching them achieve and succeed at something they enjoyed greatly.
