I have worked for many years within childcare within day nurseries and as a nanny. I have 4 (grownup) children of my own including twins. I have a BA Honour Degree in Early Years Education and I am also an independent professional children’s storyteller. I am trustworthy and dependable, I can think on my feet and out of the box, I am reliable, authentic, creative and fun loving. I have a great rapport with both children and adults alike. I am a non-smoker and have a full driving licence and my own transport.
I have worked in a free flow day nursery with children from 2-5 years of age, for the past 6 years. In the last year my role changed from Early Years Practitioner to part time children’s storyteller. I adore telling traditional tales myths and legends to children, because it helps to develop their social skills and listening. It expands their language and communication skills, it expands and develops their imaginative thinking skills, increases their understanding of other people’s feelings (emotional literacy and intelligence) and their critical thinking skills. This is because they are not just listening to a story, they become a part of the story, their ideas are listened to and can be included, building the story together, this is the wonder of oral storytelling it is in a constant state of flux, forever changing, children become collaborative storytellers too! Storytelling can be seen and heard throughout their play, this in their play! It can be seen in role play and dressing up, props, puppets and favourite toys, music, dance, singing, constructing with whatever materials they have to hand, through their speech communication and actions, young children conjure up real and imaginary worlds.
Since January I have become an independent storyteller, working part time within the nursery. I am now in search of further employment with young children as a part time nanny. I have invaluable experience as a parent, and working as a nanny, however my degree has given me the knowledge and understanding into how young children learn through play and working within a supportive nurturing nursery environment that values knowledgeable, well educated, creative, reflective staff, has enabled me to put theory into practice. However, I feel that alongside my storytelling I would like the flexibility that working as a nanny can provide and I’m searching for part time work with children and their families.
