About Me

I am a 58 year old Mother to seven children, four daughters and three sons, my oldest five are all grown up, some now have their own families. I just have a sixteen year old son and fourteen year old daughter at home now the others have flown the nest. Before having children I initially started work as a laboratory assistant in a local spice and herb factory and a crisp and snack flavouring business, developing new seasonings and testing for quality control, this employment led from my Diploma in Catering and Hotel Management course at Colchester Institute. When my first child arrived I became a stay at home mum, taking on an evening class in early years childcare. Subsequently I had several more children and relished the time at home with them. As they grew older and all started school I decided that with all my own knowledge and enjoyment I would look to working with children. I started in a local pre-school and also added hours working as a customer service adviser at B & Q at weekends. Luckily in 2011 I was able to start a Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and passed with distinctions within a year. I worked at the pre-school for ten years until a vacancy arose at the local school, where I subsequently worked until the present time. Life as a parent brings the biggest challenges and smiles, but is so wonderful if you are lucky enough to experience it. It also gives you a wealth of knowledge, where you have to be patient, organised, caring, adaptable, think on the move, learn new things to name but a few.

My Experience

Being a parent and stay at home Mother has probably given me the most broad experience. Having a large family you need to be organised, good at time keeping, resilient and able to multitask. A calendar is a must and a timetable helpful, I love cooking and especially making cakes and also used to sew, When caring for children of differing ages you need to be mindful of each child's age, development and emotional wellbeing, children are so different and each needs to feel they are loved and cared for equally.
For over twenty years I voluntarily run the village Baby and Toddler Group which shows that I am committed to others and that I communicate well, I have been able to offer other parents advice or point them in the right direction to find the help they need. Behind the scenes I planned activities, organised all the books and maintained the finances of the group, making sure that insurances etc were covered. Having had several inspections from the Pre-school Learning Alliance I am proud that the group received the highest status for the services it offered to parents and children.
Working within the Pre-school for ten years I developed good professional relationships with parents as their child's key person and went on many training courses for further development as I was able to pass on the information well to the other staff.
Since 2012 I have been employed at a Primary School as a teaching assistant and lunchtime assistant. I have mainly worked alongside the teacher in the Reception Class, following the weekly teacher class plans and working with small groups of children. Where needed I may be moved to another class to assist if needed so I am able to fit in where I am needed. The school introduced Forest School lessons where each year groups is able to spend time in the school pond area investigating, creating and learning. I have enjoyed being able to experience this new side to the school, seeing the children excited about this new adventure for them.
I have also had experience of working within a factory environment from being a laboratory technician and customer services at B & Q dealing face to face with people.
