My Summary

My Experience

I worked with twin boys who both have cerebral palsy and autism. They are both wheelchair users and I support the boys with basically everything they do. I get up in the mornings and go into get the boys ready for their day. I move onto do exercises such as sit ups and wheelchair exercises to get the boys moving. We also school the boys currently as they aren’t going to school at the minute. I help with all aspects of the boys life’s such as personal care, preparing, making and feeding the boys their meals. I also clean the house and iron the boys clothes. I also help bring them out and about as they love going out for dinner and going for walks. I also try to get the boys involved in everything we do and encourage them to try things with our help. I really enjoy helping people and find this job extremely rewarding.
I worked with positive futures for a few months to get more experience with supporting children and young people. I really enjoy working with all the children. I was a personal assistant for children with either learning or physical disabilities. At first I would’ve went to the child’s home and interacted with the child and parent. I played with the child in their home until they were ready to go out with me. I would then lift the child from either school or their home and we would have lots of fun doing activities the office had planned. These may have been in a group environment or one to one. I encouraged the child to get involved in group activities and also helped them to gain confidence when around new people. I motivated them to do there best and helped them in any way I could. I also had to help with personal care with some children.

I worked as a SEN Classroom Assistant in Mount Lourdes. I support two students with ASD. Both students also suffer from anxiety. I use resources such as visuals and social stories to help them cope with change throughout the day. I am aware of the triggers which can upset both students and I know how to avoid these. I use strategies such as finger holds, using a calm voice, taking them to a separate room, using a sensory toy, going for a walk, excreta, to help alleviate their stresses. I assist the students in the classroom, helping them to break their work down into smaller pieces which can help stop them getting overly anxious about their workload. Their work looks more achievable this way. I use words such as ‘first’ and ‘then’ to make them aware of what we are doing now and what is happening next. I also help the teachers prepare the classroom for students coming in and then in tidying up after they leave. I cooperate with my SENCO with regard to the students, following all advice and guidelines.

My Qualifications

I’ve a level 3 in Health and social care. I’m working towards a degree in early years development.

My Availability

All day during the week, Saturday mornings and afternoon. Possibly an overnight.
