My Experience

The nursery I currently work with, I provide care for young people aged 0-5. I am confident and trained in all areas of support, these include the transition of children’s developments from nappies to toilet, bottle weening, crawling to walking and development of positive behaviour. Throughout the day I supervise learning play and am involved with the care plans of each child, which support their individual support needs which range depending on their age and stage. I have been trained in makaton, first aid and fussing eating which helps being inventive to support children’s dietary needs.
Out-with my job, I support my mum with older children/young adults at the weekend. My mum is a qualified classroom assistant who looks after young people with special needs, part of her job is providing after school/weekend care at home. I often support my mum by preparing meals and provide supported play and games with the children with additional needs. Through doing this, it has increased my understanding of how to support young people/adults who struggle to communicate verbally or find simple tasks and/or situations challenging. I have developed how to think of alternative strategies and support young people/adults in differentiated ways, as strategies that work for one does not necessary work for all.
