My Experience

I have worked as a support worker for children with severe complex disabilities ages 6-19, assisting with personal care, ensuring they were having fun and were entertained, and helping them achieve their goals, such as holding the spoon when eating. Most children I worked with were unable to use conventional forms of communication, I therefore used alternative methods, such as Makaton and payed closer attention to their body language. This helped me greater understand what these children were trying to communicate and the emotions they were experiencing, this is now something I still try to be aware of with people who can use speech communication as it gives me a deeper understanding of what people are experiencing. This will help me manage what the child is experiencing, and help the child learn what they are feeling and how to manage these feelings.

Within my social work degree I learn about child safeguarding and the importance of children's early years. My education in this made me aware of the value love, creativity, eye contact, attachment and reliability has on the way we develop, I am therefore conscious that these are supplied to the child unconditionally.

As part of my training to become a social worker I had an 80 day placement at DHI in Bristol, which offers support to those with substance misuse issues. While this placement was with adults it demonstrates my ability to be patient as I worked with some individuals with severe mental health and trauma, which could be difficult for me to work with at times. Additionally, I was responsible for ensuring that children of the people using substances were safeguarded.

While I do not have as much experience in childcare as other potential babysitters, I am compassionate, unconditionally kind, responsible and quick to ask for help. I would love to support your family!

My Qualifications

I am DBS checked.

In my A-Levels I achieved an A in art, an A in sociology and a B in English literature. I also achieved an A in my EPQ on British sign language. I would love to engage in crafting activities with your children or support them with school work if this is necessary. As a child who was very ill and missed a lot of school I understand the importance of having confidence in yourself to improve academically, and this is something I feel able to help your children do.
