About Me

Hi! Hola! My name is Sara (24). I was born and raised in the lovely city of Madrid, Spain. Since I was quite young I was really passionate about languages and children, so my best friend and I volunteered at my school to prepare recreational activities for the younger ones. I also wanted to travel and be able to put into practice the languages I was learning at school (English and French), so as soon as I got the opportunity I flew the nest.

In my third year of university studying Translation and Interpreting, I lived in Bologna because of an university exchange. Ironically, I met there my partner who's English. I enjoyed the culture and the language so much that I've been going every summer since then to work in summer camps for children.

After I finished my studies, I went to live and work in Germany as a Spanish TA and the year after I moved to London for the same position at a school called Hampton school. These experiences have been so rewarding that I'm currently starting my PGCE in Modern Languages at the UoB to become a qualified teacher in the UK. That's how I've ended up in Bristol.

Why childcare?
There are many reasons why I'm passionate about working with children, but I believe it is mainly because of that innate spark and bubbliness that adults lack when growing up. They see the world differently and do not have prejudices. You can learn a lot from them. Sometimes they can indeed be very impatient and cheeky, but that's the way children are! We were once like that.

In teaching, also seeing how they learn from you and make an effort to do something difficult and then they thank you for it is one of the most rewarding aspects. What they don't realise is that you learn so much from them as well at the same time.

My Experience

I have more than 7 years of experience with children in both recreational and academic environments.

My first experience was volunteering with a friend at my primary school preparing recreational activities for younger children. I enjoyed it so much that in my adolescence, I got my first job in childcare as an au pair in Ireland when I was 17 and in Switzerland when I was 19. In the first experience, I took care of Laura and Tom aged 6 and 8 for 2 months. In Chateau D'Oex (Switzerland) I lived with an Italian family, looking after Luca, an 8-year-old boy. My tasks in both experiences entailed looking after them, cooking sometimes, taking them to school and picking them up, helping them with homework, playing with them and teaching them a bit of Spanish.

In addition, through the Leisure Activity Leader Training supplied by the Spanish Red Cross, I gained an insight into what working with children from diverse ages and backgrounds involves. As an activity leader in various camps in Spain and Italy throughout the past 5 years, I have been building up more experience: I have created several games and managed groups with conflictive behaviour issues. These camps I worked with required monitors to be on-site and entertain kids for long, sometimes 18-hour days. As a result, I learned to maintain an all-day-energetic and optimistic attitude even through challenging moments.

During my time abroad when I was studying and/or working I've had many childcare-related part-time jobs on the side. I have worked as a tutor in Spain, Germany and Italy teaching Spanish and English to different kids aged from 6 to 13 years old. I have also worked as a nanny in these countries for a few hours in the afternoon and the evening two/three days per week.

In Spain and Germany, I worked as an after-school teacher. I would give lessons to beginners aged 6-9 in English in Madrid. I worked in a Schülehilfe in Oldenburg assisting children with their homework and preparation for exams for the subjects of Spanish, English and French.

More recently, in these last 2 years, I've been working as a Spanish teaching assistant first in Germany in a Gymnasium- Berufschüle and last year in London at Hampton School. Both jobs were full time and my tasks included working with individuals and small groups for Spanish conversation and the preparation of oral topics. I also assisted teachers with their day-to-day classroom work and with departmental administrative tasks.
Additionally, at Hampton school, I was in charge of running language clubs and supporting pupils in preparing for language competitions such as national Spanish debates.

Nanny ethos
I'm the loving, bubbly and creative type of nanny! I'm the one who will be always down to play any board/card games or play outside, give loads of hugs and speak with your children in different languages.

In my opinion, kids need to do activities that entail more than watching TV or playing video games. It is hard to find the time sometimes. That's why I always try to come up with fun games indoors or outdoors depending on the age. Some of the classics are floor is lava, hide and seek, categories, pictionary, uno and jenga. However, there's loads of activities such as easy diy and crafts (I've learned some in summer camps), cooking or playing sports outside. I am also up for taking them to cultural activities such as museums and workshops. I recently saw there are some workshops for children in Arnolfini galleries.

In addition, homework won't be an issue since I've been a tutor for more than 5 years now. I'm glad to help them with any subject!

I've been working in childcare abroad and that's why I have a better intercultural understanding as well as I can speak fluently more languages than English such as Spanish, Italian, French (medium level) and a tiny bit of German.
